“I had been looking for a way to reconnect with my Ukrainian heritage for a long time. My grandparents shared so much with me through food and stories, but the language was something I never learned.
When I heard about the choir, I wasn’t sure what to expect. As a second-generation Ukrainian American with no language skills—but a love of singing—I decided to give it a try.
What I found was an incredibly welcoming and generous community. From the very beginning, rehearsals felt relaxed and supportive. People were patient with my missteps, helping me with pronunciation and encouraging me along the way.
I kept coming back. I still can’t speak Ukrainian fluently—but I’m learning. And now I can sing more than a dozen songs in the language. Even more meaningful are the friendships I’ve built and the sense of connection I’ve found through the music.

“While I was at a local Ukrainian event, members of Lisova Pisnya invited me to join one of their choir practices. I’m not Ukrainian and had never been in a choir before, so I agreed to try it with the intention of playing guitar with them every once in a while. In a matter of weeks, I was somehow singing traditional Ukrainian songs with Ukrainians across Portland and beyond. It was the first time I felt connected to a local community since I can remember.
Performing with the choir has also made me a better musician and singer. It’s been a rewarding adventure full of timeless songs, countless laughs, and great food. Lisova Pisnya is a true gift to Portland and a prime example of the beauty of Ukrainian culture!
